Puerto del Carmen is the longest-established tourist resort on Lanzarote, situated only about 10 minutes’ drive from the airport. As with many similarly located European seaside resorts, the start of its popularity amongst UK and Irish tourists dates back to the early 1960’s. Before this time it was a small fishing village, and the Old Town and harbour areas still retain much of this original charm.
The newer parts of Puerto del Carmen boast a multitude of bars, restaurants, apartments and hotels for visitors to choose from. There is also a very active club and nightlife scene in Puerto del Carmen, but that does not deter holiday makers, local and ex-pat residents of all ages from enjoying the many facilities on offer.
Puerto del Carmen has a very long sandy beach with a gentle slope into the sea. It is safe for bathers of all ages, including children. Behind the beach is the main thoroughfare – over a mile of busy shops, restaurants and bars, with many holiday villas and apartment blocks sitting behind these.
Please note that Puerto del Carmen is built on a hill sloping down towards the ocean, and less physically able people may want to take this into account in choosing their holiday accommodation.
Further South from Puerto del Carmen, the relatively new marina at Puerto Calero is a haven for well-heeled boating enthusiasts, as well as those who just enjoy watching beautiful boats being manoeuvred in and out of the marina. There are a number of high quality bars and restaurants looking out on to the marina, and all enjoying a sheltered and sunny position.Puerto Calero is also the base for the very popular Catlanza catamaran and other boat trips, as well as the Museo de Cetaceos (dolphin and whale museum).
