Puerto del Carmen was made for beach holidays. The islands most popular tourist resort boasts some of the best stretches of sand on Lanzarote.
These golden grains run virtually unbroken for around 6km, from the Hotel San Antonio through to the Old Town Harbour, encompassing a number of beautiful coves and distinctly different beaches on the way.
In the other direction a further 9km of beach runs through Los Pocillos to Matagorda. But the beaches in Puerto del Carmen generally offer a bit more shelter from any prevailing wind. And all are within walking distance of each other, making it easy to beach hop between them.
This is Puerto del Carmen’s main beach and flanks the Avenida de las Playas, it’s main street. The beach itelf is almost a mile in length, stretching from Fariones at one end to Matagorda at the other.
There are various watersports available on Playa Grande, and the bathing is very safe, as the beach falls very gradually towards the sea. However, and despits its size, it gets very busy and crowded during the peak summer and other holiday seasons.
Other Beaches in Puerto del Carmen
At the Fariones Hotel end of the main Playa Grande, are a few smaller inlets or coves. These include Playa Chica, which has a lot of rock formations, so is very good for watching sealife via snorkeling or scuba equipment.
From Playa Chica you can also get easily to the small beach in front of the Fariones Hotel, which is very pretty. There are also several small beaches reached from steps between the shops at the start of the ‘strip’ (Avenida de las Playas), just neat the Hotel San Antonio.
